Happy Donkeys

A happy donkey is never the product of chance. It is the visible result of knowledge, discipline, respect, and responsible care.

Donkeys are intelligent, sensitive, and deeply perceptive animals. They do not thrive under pressure, inconsistency, or confusion. They need clarity in their training, fairness in their handling, physical comfort, and an environment that allows them to feel secure. When these conditions are met, they become calm, reliable, and genuinely present in their work.

At The Donkeys of the Heart, donkey welfare is not treated as a secondary concern. It is a guiding principle.

Proper nutrition, regular farrier and veterinary care, suitable equipment, thoughtful training, and protection from excessive noise, stress, and workload are all essential parts of that commitment.

Just as important is the recognition that each donkey is an individual, with a distinct temperament, specific needs, and limits that must be respected.

This approach is both ethical and practical. A donkey that feels safe and well cared for is more available for learning, connection, and meaningful interaction. The quality of their well-being directly shapes the quality of the experience they can offer to each child.

In serious equine-assisted work, especially with donkey, welfare is not beside the mission. It is what gives the mission its truth.
