Emotional Intelligence in Action — With Donkeys and Young Minds đź«Źđź’›

At The Donkeys of the Heart, emotional intelligence isn’t just a concept — it’s the foundation of our work with children and adolescents facing complex mental health challenges and light physical disabilities that often go hand in hand.

Each of our students experiences the world differently. Many are nonverbal, hypersensitive to noise or touch, or struggle with balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.

That’s why we partner with donkeys.

Why donkeys? Donkeys move more slowly, observe more attentively, and respond more honestly. They are calm, grounded, and emotionally intelligent. Their presence invites children to regulate themselves, to breathe, to listen, to trust. They respond not to commands, but to relationships — and that changes everything. In every session, our students practice:·

  • Emotional self-awareness through interaction with a deeply intuitive animal·

  • Self-regulation by adjusting their tone, posture, and energy·

  • Empathy and patience in a safe, nonjudgmental setting·

  • Social-emotional communication, even without words.

These lessons aren’t theoretical — they are lived in the arena, on the ground, through touch, silence, movement, and connection.
